In this shortened episode, John Marchione, Mayor of Redmond, Washington, talks to us about the role of city government in the housing market. Topics covered include zoning to promote affordable housing, city planning to maintain a high quality of life, and improved police and fire services. Attracting a strong business presence, such as the tech industry in Redmond, can be a function of city government as well, as can promoting diversity in business to avoid reliance on a single industry.
John Marchione was first elected mayor in 2007 and is now finishing his second term. Prior to becoming mayor, John served Redmond for four years as a city councilmember. John has a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Washington and more than 25 years of professional experience in local government; working in finance, capital projects, water quality and supply, and economic development. As the Chief Executive Officer for the City of Redmond, John is directly responsible for managing a $300 million budget and more than 600 employees.
